Mursal
Women's Magazine is considered Afghanistan's
first nationally distributed women's magazine
in history and is breaking ground each week
by covering a range of women's issues never
before addressed in Afghanistan from women's
rights to political participation and the
promotion of literacy and preventative health.
|
|
Given the high rate of illiteracy, especially
amongst Afghan girls and women, Mursal
is written in an easy to read format and is very
popular amongst school girls and house wives.
Mursal is often read by those
who are literate in their family or community
to those who are not. Like Killid Weekly, it is
estimated that each copy of the magazine purchased
is shared with another ten people thereby significantly
expanding Mursal's weekly
print run of 15,000 to an audience of 150,000
a week.
|
Indeed it’s
primary audience is the average, semi literate
Afghan women, however anecdotal evidence
indicates that Mursal is largely demanded
by illiterate women in rural parts of Afghanistan.
As well, those who can read are sharing
the magazine’s content with those
in their families and communities who cannot
by reading it out loud, thereby passing
its information o to many other women.
Mursal (a type
of flower) Weekly, today the largest and
most widely read women’s magazine
in Afghanistan was launched on 8 March 2003.
Its first publication was as a free insert
in Killid Weekly (our other magazine) in
order to test the market for women’s
magazines in Afghanistan.
Two years later, Mursal is selling for
9 Afghanis releasing every week 15,000 copies
nationally. (34 provinces, 550 disctrics)
from its 9 main offices: Mazar-i-Sharif,
Ghazni, Herat, Kandahar, Faryab, Jalalababad
,Pollekhomri ,Kabul, and Baghlan.
The main role of Mursal
is to support the women in their daily problems
by informing and entertaining them and also
to allow them a small window to the outside
world.
